Initially the outer shell comprising roll (6) or sheet (7) material is cut (8) and shaped (2) into a preform, which is then transferred (16) in-line to an injection molding plant (3) to provide the backing. The process is controlled centrally (23) according to the demand for different articles. The items are transported by a conveying system over two floors and handled by robotic arms (12, 16, 20). The various stages of cutting and shaping of the preform are arranged on a turntable (9). Each injection molding machine (4) has a transfer station (15) for quality control.
