<p>A chemical process for preparing title cpds. of formula (I): (where x y is ) (designated as beta-ergocryptine and 9,10-dihydro-beta-ergocryptine) and their acid addition salts is claimed. beta-Ergocryptine can also be isolated from the ergotoxin complex of natural ergot. Beta-Ergocryptine is useful for treating vascular headaches, and the 9,10-dihydro cpd. for treating peripheral and cerebral circulatory disorders and hypertension.</p>
