In a brake actuator in which the brakes are spring applied and are normally released by fluid pressure, the brakes can be released in the absence of sufficient fluid pressure by mechanical means comprising a shaft 56 rigidly carried by the piston assembly, a nut 80 threadedly received on the shaft, a cover member 72 with a part 73 of hexagonal configuration to receive a tool by which it can be rotated and engaging a hexagonal sleeve 68 also engaging the nut 80 which has a lip 81 overhanging a ring clip 82 to prevent the nut being screwed entirely off the shaft, the lip engaging the ring with a jam fit which locks the mechanism against relative movement when the parts are in the inoperative position shown. When sufficient torque is applied to the cap 72, the lip and ring are released from one another and the nut can be rotated to move rod 56 and compress the spring 42 of the actuator.
