PURPOSE: An automatic transmission installed with a torque converter and an automatic shift method using the transmission are provided to improve traveling performance and to reduce the output loss of an engine by increasing torque load of a pump connection drive shaft and reducing a slip of the torque converter. CONSTITUTION: An automatic transmission installed with a torque converter is composed of the torque converter for changing automatically speed according to the change of load by receiving rotational power from an engine; a pump connection drive shaft(1) linked to a pump of the torque converter to receive the rotational power transmitted from the engine to the torque converter; a turbine connection drive shaft(2) coupled to a turbine of the torque converter to receive shifted rotational power by the torque converter; a first shift unit(A) connected to the pump connection drive shaft by a speed-up gear(3) and constrained by the turbine connection drive shaft to automatically shift each rotational power applied from the pump and the turbine; a second shift unit(B) for outputting shifted rotational power by combining each rotational power of the first shift unit and the turbine connection drive shaft; and an output shaft(4) for receiving the shifted rotational power by the second shift unit.
