PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve the compatibility of higher luminance and downsizing of a projection display device using a reflection type liquid crystal element. SOLUTION: The projection display device is so constituted that one optical path of a polarization conversion element having two optical paths is reflected by a polarized light separating element and is emitted toward a video display element and that the other optical path is transmitted through the polarization conversion element, is transmitted through an approximately half-wave retardation plate, is reflected by the reflection element and is then emitted toward the video display element.
