PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a belt fixing device which is installed in an image forming apparatus and which is capable of avoiding a large decrease in the temperature of a pressure roller directly after the start of paper passage, thereby steadily fixing a toner image free from nonuniform gloss resulting from a glossiness change, and capable of preventing an increase in power consumption. SOLUTION: The belt fixing device includes: a heat roller having a heating means; a support roller disposed in parallel to the heat roller; a fixing belt stretched endlessly around the heat roller and support roller; a pressure roller disposed opposite to the support roller via the fixing belt; and a pressure-contact/separation mechanism for the pressure roller and the fixing belt. In the belt fixing device, the fixing belt has perforations, and the pressure-contact/separation mechanism is provided to an auxiliary roller serving as a sprocket which engages the perforations in relation to the fixing belt. The pressure roller and the auxiliary roller are controlled so that only one of the rollers comes in pressure contact with the fixing belt. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
