PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable compression ratio engine simply formed in structure, capable of easily securing sealing performance, and having high reliability. SOLUTION: In this variable compression ratio engine, a connecting rod 13 converting the vertical movement of a piston 6 in a cylinder 5 to the rotating motion of a crankshaft 14 is divided to at least two pieces, and a control rod 21 is connected to the divided part of the connecting rod 13 or near the divided part so that the pivot position of the control rod 21 can be displaced. The right side cylinder rod 28 of a reciprocatingly moving hydraulic cylinder 27 of piston double rod type is linked to the control rod 21 so that the piston part 35 of the hydraulic cylinder 27 can be moved according to the displacement of the pivot position of the control rod 21. Two hydraulic pressure chambers 43 and 44 demarcated by the piston part 35 are connected to each other through a flow passage so that a hydraulic oil can be selectively supplied from the right side hydraulic chamber 43 to the left side hydraulic chamber 44 or from the left side hydraulic chamber 44 to the right side hydraulic chamber 43 or can be stopped.
