An apparatus for winding a strip of tread material 13 on to a rotating tyre casing comprises an arm 14, which is movable parallel to the axis of a rotating drum by means of a motor 72 and a screw thread 68, a system of rollers for guiding a supply of material to the casing and stitching it thereto, and a template 16 representing the desired contour of the applied material, the template being followed by a head 44 containing a switch which is closed by relative movement of a roller 46 when the desired thickness has been reached at the point of application. Closure of the swicth operates the motor 72 to move the arm 14 and head 44 until a point is reached whereat the switch re-opens because further tread material is required. The speed of rotation of the casing is adjusted to take up slack in the supply of strip by means of a counter-weighted dancer arm 26 and an associated potentiometer device 28. The apparatus may be moved on rollers 54, and is fixed in position at a tyre building station using jacks 57a and 57b.
