PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyvinyl alcohol-based polymer-based crosslinked polymer utilizable as a film or a sheet and to provide a method for producing the polymer. SOLUTION: The polyvinyl alcohol-based crosslinked polymer is obtained by mixing a polyvinyl alcohol with a formyl group-containing polyalkylene glycol having at least two formyl groups in water. Although acetalization reaction reacting a formyl group with a hydroxy group in a water-based system is generally outside the scope of thought, according to the present method, acetalization reaction proceeds even under the mild condition of room temperature and a crosslinked structure is formed.
