PURPOSE: To provide an air purification system and a method for controlling the air purification system, which are able to perform a ventilation operation and an air purification operation in accordance with contamination degree of indoor air. CONSTITUTION: The system comprises a main body (10) including a ventilation unit and an air-purification unit, an air-supplying fan, and a motor for the air-supplying fan, a sensor (21) for detecting contamination concentration of indoor air, and a controller which determines an operation mode from a plurality of operation modes in accordance with the contamination concentration detected by the sensor and controls the ventilation unit and the air purification unit corresponding to the determined operation mode.
