PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color wheel unit and a projection type display device using the color wheel unit that solve the problem of a projected image flickering due to vibration of the color wheel and the color wheel case. SOLUTION: The color wheel unit comprises a color wheel 12 having a plurality of color filters that transmit or reflect different colored lights disposed circumferentially, a motor 11 that rotates the color wheel 12, and a color wheel case 13 that houses the color wheel 12 and has an opening part 14 for exposing a part of the color wheel 12. The gap between the inner surface of the peripheral wall 13a and the peripheral surface of the color wheel 12 is made to be 1 mm or less, and the gap between the front wall part 13b and the rear wall part 13c is made to be 1 mm or less, thereby solving the problem of a projected image flickering due to vibration of the color wheel 12 in a projection type display device of an SCR method.
