PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform image transmission from an image pickup module by controlling the image pickup module on the image receiving side and to reduce power consumption. SOLUTION: This bidirectional data communication system has an image pickup terminal 100A which picks up an image of an object and generates image data and an image receiving terminal which displays the image data and mutually performs transmission and reception of the data between the image pickup terminal 100A and the image receiving terminal. The image pickup terminal 100A performs time compression of the image data for one picture to be transmitted so that a period obtained by combining a period for transmitting the image data for one picture and a period for receiving control data to itself to be transmitted from the image receiving terminal becomes approximately the same as a display period of the image data for one picture by the image receiving terminal.
