PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a dimethylol carboxylic acid derivative with a microorganism, by which the dimethylol carboxylic acid can be produced from a tris(hydroxymethyl) derivative in high yield and in high selectivity. SOLUTION: This method for producing the dimethylol carboxylic acid derivative, comprising oxidizing the tris(hydroxymethyl) derivative, is characterized by using a bacterium having an ability for oxidizing the methylol group and belonging to the genus Xanthobacter, Mycoplana, Gluconobacter or Acetobacter. The bacterium is cultured in a culture medium, and the obtained culture liquid, the cell, or the cell treated product is used to act on the tris(hydroxymethyl) derivative.
