PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus such as a CMOS image sensor in which the generation of a flicker and a ripple, etc. are suppressed in photography under illumination accompanied by a frequency variation. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus has a continuous exposure period of 1/100 seconds in each vertical section and performs a simultaneous exposure operation and a signal reading operation beginning at a dividing point determined by a division radix 3 x n (n is a positive integer) within the exposure period of 1/100 seconds in the case of performing the photography under an illumination of 50Hz by an imaging apparatus of 60Hz system. In addition, the imaging apparatus has a continuous exposure period of 1/60 seconds or 1/120 seconds in each vertical section and performs a simultaneous exposure operation and a signal reading operation beginning at a dividing point determined by a division radix 5 x n (n is a positive integer) within the exposure period of 1/60 seconds or 1/120 seconds in the case of performing the photography under an illumination of 60Hz by an imaging apparatus of 50Hz system.
