<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting diode in which luminance can be prevented from lowering when a submount substrate is employed. <P>SOLUTION: A semiconductor light emitting device 6 mounting a semiconductor light emitting element 5 on a submount substrate 10 is connected with a pair of electrodes 2 and 3 provided in a resin case 4, and then the interior of the resin case 4 is filled with sealing resin 7 principally comprising epoxy thus sealing the semiconductor light emitting device 6. In such a light emitting diode 1, the sealing resin 7 comprises a reflective layer 12 covering the upper surface of the submount substrate 10, and a light transmitting layer 13 covering the semiconductor light emitting element 5.
