PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power converter in which overvoltages are not applied to a smoothing capacitor and a load even if a malfunction occurs in a switching element. SOLUTION: The power converter feeds DC power to the load 9 by receiving an input from a DC cable 1 that is a DC power supply, by using a step-down chopper circuit that comprises the switching element 4 and a back-flow diode 5. In the power converter, a series winding 6a of an auto transformer 6 arranged at an output side and a shunt winding 6b are connected to the back-flow diode 5 in parallel, the anode of a diode 7 is connected to the intermediate terminal of the shut winding 6b, the smoothing capacitor 8 is connected between a cathode of the diode 7 and the other terminal of the shunt winding 6b, and the load 9 is connected to the smoothing capacitor 8 in parallel.
