The invention relates to a liquid-crystal medium based on a polar compound mixture having a positive or negative dielectric anisotropy containing at least one type of compound of general formula (I), wherein R<1> and R<2 >are identical or different, independently representing hydrogen, an alkali radical having from 1 to 12 non-substituted carbon atoms, substituted only by CN or CF3 or at least only by a halogen, wherein in the radicals, one or several CH2 groups can be independently substituted by O-, -S-, -CH=CH-, -CC-, -CO-, -CO-O-, -O-CO- or -O-CO-O in such a way that O atoms are not directly linked. The use of the inventive medium for electro-optical engineering and electro-optical display devices containing said medium are also disclosed.
