PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the combustion efficiency in an internal combustion engine by strengthening a squish flow generated in the cylinder of the internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: Suction valves 4 and 5, and a recessed space 7a formed at a crown plane of a piston 7 are provided. The recessed space 7a is arranged at the position opposite only to the suction valve 4 out of the suction valves 4 and 5, and functions as a combustion chamber by covering an opening at an upper wall face of the cylinder 8 inside at the compression top dead center. In the recessed space 7a, when the suction valve 4 opens near the top dead center of the piston 7, the suction valve 4 enters the recessed space 7a to avoid the interference of the suction valve 4 with the piston 7. This makes the recessed space 7a functioning as the combustion chamber to share the function of a valve recess to enlarge a squish area 14. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
