Method and device to determine the dominant type of distortion

The method involves carrier frequency modulation with distortion by at least two different types of noise, determining (12) an estimated value of the power of the received signal (r[k]), determining (10) an estimated value for the signal-to-noise plus interference ratio (SINRest) of the received signal and feeding at least these estimated values into a decision device (14) that determines at least one dominant noise type using at least one definable criterion. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a method of receiving digital data transmitted by modulating a carrier frequency (b) and semiconducting component in which the inventive process is stored.
