A substantially crystalline random copolymer of a branched chain a -olefin of general formula CH2=CHR, wherein R is a branched chain alkyl group containing 4 to 10 carbon atoms, and a normal a -olefin is produced by polymerizing the olefins in the presence of a catalyst obtained from (a) a solid crystalline compound of a metal from Groups IV to VIII of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table, the metal being in a valency state lower than its maximum, and (b) an organo metallic compound of a metal from Groups I, II or III or of tin, or a hydride of a metal from Groups I, II or III. Compound (a) is preferably a transition metal halide, e.g. TiCl3 and compound (b) an alkyl aluminium halide, e.g. AlEt2Cl. The polymerization may be in bulk, or in a diluent, e.g. heptane, octane, benzene, toluene and xylene. A molecular weight control agent, e.g. H2 may be used. Branched chain olefins specified are 3-methylpentene - 1, 4 - methylpentene - 1,3 - ethylpentene - 1, 4,6 - dimethylheptene - 1, and 3,4 - dimethylpentene - 1. The normal olefin is e.g. ethylene, propylene, pentene-1, hexene-1, octene-1 or decene-1. In the examples, 4-methylpentene-1 is polymerized with (1) pentene-1, (2) decene-1 or (3) hexene-1, using n-heptane as solvent and AlEt2Cl/TiCl3 as catalyst. The polymerization is terminated by deactivation of the catalyst with methanol and acetylacetone. |
