Petroleum discharges and oil slicks on water are controlled and taken up by using a ferrofluid in such quantities that 0.01-4.0 vol.% of magnetisable particles is contained in the mixture of oil and ferrofluid and then using magnetic forces to remove the oil. The ferrofluid is a stable colloid dispersion of magnetic particles in a hydrocarbon base or carrier chosen from 9-21C aliphatic hydrocarbons 7-18C naphthene hydrocarbons and their mixtures. The magnetic particle dispersion is stabilised by a surfactant which is insoluble in H2O but soluble in hydrocarbons and is present in such a conc. that the ferrofluid at room temp. has a diffusion coefficient on distilled water of less than 20 dynes/cm.
|
