The tank is ventilated with air and the gas is treated in a first cyclone (4), combined with a neutralizing liquid and treated in a second cyclone (12) before venting to the atmosphere. A method for removing gas and vapor from ship tanks or storage tanks involves; (a) ventilating the tank with air; (b) treating the gas from the tank in a first cyclone; (c) combining the treated gas with a neutralizing liquid in a static mixer (11); (d) treating the mixture in a second cyclone; and (e) venting the treated mixture to the atmosphere.
