Described is an absorbent article (10), in particular a sanitary napkin, having the following structure: a liquid-impermeable bottom layer (12) disposed away from the wearer's body when said absorbent article is in use, a primary storage layer (14) provided above said liquid-impermeable layer (12), a secondary storage layer (20) provided above said primary storage layer (14), a compensation layer (32) provided above said secondary storage layer (20), a cover layer (34) provided above said compensation layer (32), said cover layer having a central opening (36), and a liquid-permeable top layer (40) which is disposed toward the wearer's body when the absorbent article is in use.
