To insulate liquid methane reservoirs in marine tankers, particularly spherical and cylindrical reservoirs, sheets of cellular insulating material may be used as an outer cover. The sheets are held in place on the reservoir by resilient elements which are spring-loaded inwards from an envelope, e.g., in steel mesh completely surrounding and spaced from the reservoir. The sheets adjust to unstressed positions when the reservoir is subject to thermal strains. Separate sheets may be joined together by flexible material.
