Thiosalicylic acids and amides. Compds. (I), useful as antibacterials esp. against coccidiosis in poultry, intermediates for corrosion inhibitors in oils, and as rubber, motor oil and polyolefin additives where Y is SR' or NR"2; R' is 1-18C alkyl, or 3-18C cycloalkyl, 7-14C-aralkyl, 3-8C alkoxyalkyl, 3-12C alkylthioalkyl, 2-15C dialkylaminoalkyl or -hydroxyalkyl; R" is 1-4C alkyl, -cycloalkyl, -alkoxy- alkyl, -alkylthioalkyl or - dialkylaminoalkyl, one R" may be H and the other NR"2 may be a heterocyclic ring opt. contg. a further N, S or O atom; R"' is 1-4C alkyl; and R is H, halogen, 5-7C cycloalkyl, 1-18C alkyl, - alkoxy-dialkylamino or -alkylthio or together with the benzene ring forms a quinoline, iso quinoline, benzofuran or benzothiophen ring system, provided that R is not H or alkoxy only and one R is at least other than H, are prepd. by reacting a phenol with CS2 and esterifying or amidifying the thiosalicylic acid formed.
