A hygienic cover for a door handle, e.g. a toilet door, has a continuous plastic sleeve wound onto a reel in flat form and pulled down over the vertical handle (9). The bottom of the handle has a slitting blade to slit the tubing before winding into a tray (5). The tuning is pulled down manually or automatically, the latter system driven by a servo motor or by a mechanical drive from a drag wheel (6) at the bottom of the door to pull the sleeve whenever the door is opened and closed.
