A rock climber wears a harness attached to a shock-absorbing harness in turn attached to a safety line. The shock absorbing harness incorporates a shock absorbing unit consisting of a buckle and shock-absorbing strap. The buckle has rounded inner edges through which the shock-absorbing strap slides when loaded. The shock load is minimised by the internal friction of the folded strap within the adjacent strap pack.
