PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a nematic liquid crystal composition having a lower low limit temperature (T<SB>→N</SB>) of the liquid crystal phase, a high upper limit temperature (T<SB>N-I</SB>) of the liquid crystal phase and low viscosity by using an indane compound. SOLUTION: The indane compound is expressed by formula (I). This nematic liquid crystal composition is produced by using a specific liquid crystal compound. The nematic liquid crystal composition has a wide liquid crystal phase temperature range and, accordingly, is extremely useful as an active matrix liquid crystal display element having a wide service temperature range and usable outdoors and in a car.
