PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image read apparatus capable of reliably judging the size of an original so as to decrease the time for judging the size of the original. SOLUTION: The image read apparatus is provided with: a transparent original platen; an image sensor for reading the original by applying photoelectric conversion to the light reflected from the original placed on the face of the original platen; a light source for irradiating the original platen from the rear platen face; and an original cover provided in a rockable way between the attitude of opening the panel face of the original platen and the attitude of covering the panel face of the original platen. The image read apparatus includes an original size judging means for judging the size of the original placed on the panel face of the original platen on the basis of a change in the quantity of the light reflected from the original cover which receives light emitted from the light source and made incident onto a prescribed pixel of the image sensor for a period when the original cover rocks from the attitude of opening the panel face of the original platen into the attitude of covering the panel face of the original platen.
