PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve combustibility of lean exhaust-gas in a succeeding cylinder in an engine in which lean exhaust-gas in a preceding cylinder is burned again in the succeeding cylinder in order to eliminate a lean NOx catalyst. SOLUTION: In the engine having an even number of cylinders, exhaust gas of the preceding cylinder on the exhaust stroke side is introduced into the succeeding cylinder on the intake stroke side so as to burn the exhaust gas again between a pair of cylinders having an overlap in the motion of exhaust and intake stokes. A port 17 for introducing the exhaust gas is provided as a helical port 17 in the succeeding cylinder. Consequently, a swirl can be caused in a combustion chamber 12 in the succeeding cylinder. Even when a sufficient distance in a straight line is not ensured in the exhaust-gas introducing passage, an intake flow is formed in the combustion chamber 12 of the succeeding cylinder, and the combustibility in the succeeding cylinder can be improved.
