The fuel injector has a boiling chamber 20 mounted directly on the cylinder head or block of the engine and connected between a pressurised liquid fuel supply 38 and the combustion chamber via respective timed fuel admission and fuel discharge valves 30, 40 into and out of the boiling chamber 20. In operation, a predetermined quantity of liquid fuel is admitted at a predetermined time during the engine cycle from the pressurised fuel supply through the fuel admission valve 30 into the boiling chamber 20 whilst the fuel discharge valve 40 is closed such that the admitted liquid fuel absorbs heat from the hot walls of the boiling chamber and evaporates to generate a high vapour pressure within the boiling chamber, and at least some of the liquid or vaporised fuel is released at a later predetermined time during the engine cycle from the boiling chamber under the high vapour pressure generated within the boiling chamber through the fuel discharge valve 40 into the combustion chamber of the engine whilst the fuel admission 30 valve is closed. The fuel injector is particularly suitable for direct injection of LPG.
