In the embodiment described a copy cylinder 14, mounting a master (10) (Fig. 6, not shown) of the die configuration, and an electrode cylinder 20 are mounted on a shaft 26 of a milling machine 18, which shaft is rotatable by a motor 30 for moving the cylinder 14 relative to a scanning device 32. The machine table 16 is movable by a motor 34. The pattern of the cutting edge on the cylinder 14 is sensed by the scanner 32 having a drive control means 36 which controls the motors 30, 34 and causes a grooved reproduction 12a of the pattern to be machined on the carbon electrode 20. The formed electrode 20 and a hardened die blank cylinder 45 are placed on shafts 49, 53 of an electro-erosion machine which shafts are rotated by a variable speed motor 59. The shafts 49, 53 are maintained parallel during electrical discharge machining by guide-rods 54 secured to a shaft 53 carrying member 50 and slidably engaging a shaft 49 carrying member 46. The die blank 45 has a diameter equal to the diameter of the electrode 20 minus twice the depth of the groove 12a. Cutting edges 12b are formed on the cylinder 45 by the machining operation. |
