A fire retardant preparation based on a metal organo-phosphinate or -diphosphinate salt also contains 0.1-10 wt.% of a fluid component. Fire retardant preparations (FRP) containing (A) 90-99.9 wt.% phosphinate salt and/or diphosphinate salt of formula (I) and/or (II) respectively, or polymers thereof, (B) 0-50 wt.% of a nitrogen-containing synergist and/or a phosphorus/nitrogen fire retardant and (C) 0.1-10 wt.% of a fluid component. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a method for the production of FRP by combining the solid components with the aid of a dissolver-stirrer or a tumble mixer (2) fireproofed thermoplastic moulding materials (MM1) containing FRP (3) fireproofed thermoset materials (MM2) comprising moulding materials, coatings or laminates based on thermosetting resins containing FRP (4) polymer mouldings, film, yarn and fibres containing these materials.
