PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve display image quality by preventing the occurrence of a state that the luminance of an image region as a side panel changes dynamically by PLE control. SOLUTION: The display apparatus is so constituted that a composite image signal obtained by compositing an image signal as a side panel with an input image signal corresponding to a picture region can be displayed and outputted and that a picture display is carried out by the the PLE control. In creating the image signal as the side panel, an average luminance level of the input image signal is first detected. The luminance level of the image signal as the side panel before the composition is then set on the basis of the detection result of the average luminance level relating to the input image signals so as to obtain a display luminance level in which the visual luminance of the displayed side panel is substantially constant, as the result of the PLE control.
