Disclosed is a filter (1) for liquids, particularly the oil in automatic transmissions, comprising a housing (6) that encompasses a top part (2) and a bottom part (4) which is connected thereto. A filter medium (12) which separates an inlet (8) from an outlet (10) is disposed between the top part (2) and the bottom part (4). Two spaced-apart supporting members (16, 18) th at are located on top of each other are kept at a distance from the top part (2 ) or the bottom part (4) in at least one area (14) of the housing (2). In orde r to create a maximum filter area within a limited space, the filter medium (1 2) is placed around the supporting members (16, 18) in an S-shaped manner such that the filter medium (12) is effective in three superimposed layers in sai d area (14).
