OPTICAL FIXED ATTENUATOR AND METHOD FOR FABRICATING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fixed attenuator having high reliability and a method for fabricating the same by which the burden of work such as insert fixation of an optical fiber in a ferrule is eliminated.

SOLUTION: An optical fiber 10 is surface-metallized and used as one electrode in electroforming, whereby a metal layer which serves as a ferrule 11 is directly formed on the outer surface of the optical fiber 10 to produce a long ferrule 11 in which the optical fiber 10 and the metal layer are completely integrated, and an optical device constituting the optical fixed attenuator is obtained only by cutting the ferrule 11 to a prescribed size. When an attenuation film is used as an attenuation part 19, it is held between two ferrules 11. When an attenuation doped fiber is used, a long ferrule 11 is formed using a doped fiber as the optical fiber 10 and cut to a prescribed size.
