PURPOSE: A method for identifying a device plugged in an earphone jack is provided to recognize a kind of a device plugged in an earphone jack according to an ADC difference of the device, thereby displaying an icon corresponding to the recognized device on the screen of a portable terminal. CONSTITUTION: A device is connected to an earphone jack(S1). A plug-in operation of the device is sensed(S2). An MSM detects an analog voltage value to convert into a digital value, and decides whether the ADC value is within an ADC range of an earphone(S3). If so, the MSM recognizes the plugged-in device as an earphone device(S4). If the ADC value is not within the ADC range, the MSM decides whether a data flow occurs(S5). If so, the MSM recognizes the plugged-in device as a camera(S6). If the data flow does not occur, the MSM recognizes the device as an audio device(S7). When a kind of the device is recognized, the MSM displays an icon corresponding to the recognized device on a display(S8).
