PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which suppresses deterioration in the image quality due to transfer dust or transfer failure when the toner is transferred from an electrophotographic photoreceptor to an intermediate transfer body and which maintains the suppressing state against deterioration of the transferred image. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus carries out primary transfer of a toner image on an image carrying body to an intermediate transfer body and secondary transfer of the toner image on the intermediate transfer body to a transfer material. In this apparatus, two kinds of electric fields are generated in either side of the contact part of the image carrying body and the intermediate transfer body: an electric field in the direction to move the toner to the image carrying body side, the electric field generated in the space between the surface of the image carrying body and the surface of the intermediate transfer body in the upstream side in the rotation direction of the image carrying body; and an electric field in the direction to move the toner to the intermediate transfer body side, the electric field generated in the space between the surface of the image carrying body and the surface of the intermediate transfer body in the downstream side. The image carrying body consists of an electrophotographic photoreceptor having a photosensitive layer 82 and a surface protective layer 83 successively layered on a conductive substrate 81. The surface protective layer of the electrophotographic photoreceptor comprises a radiation crosslinking agent and a charge transport substance and is crosslinked by radiation.
