An open ended spinning machine has a work station at which a thread is presented to a winding unit, is trapped and then presented to a thread cutter. The thread is positioned and tautened over a cutting edge and is then cut by relative motion between the thread and cutting edge. The cutting action is effected either by movement of the thread, movement of the cutting edge, or both. Also claimed is a commensurate textile machine.
