PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for detecting a highlighted section are provided to effectively detect the highlighted section with a small quantity of calculations by detecting the highlighted section based on the intensity of an audio signal from data including audio information. CONSTITUTION: A highlighted section detecting apparatus includes an audio signal extractor(101) for extracting an audio signal from input motion picture data, and an audio signal intensity analyzer(103) for analyzing the intensity of the extracted audio signal. The apparatus further includes a threshold determining unit(105) for extracting a pattern of variation of the audio signal intensity based on the audio signal intensity analysis result to determine a threshold value of the audio signal for deciding a highlighted section of the motion picture data, and a highlighted second determining unit(107) for comparing the audio signal intensity analysis result to the threshold value and extracting the starting point and end point of the highlighted section based on the comparison result to determine the highlighted section.
