PURPOSE: An authentication method of a data processing device and devices appropriate for the method are provided to make it possible to record/regenerate data only on/from an authenticated record medium. CONSTITUTION: The device, for processing data, comprises an encrypt module(704), a decrypt module(708), and a host authentication controller(710). The encrypt module(704) encrypts the first variable by using a host key allocated to a host system, and generates the first encrypt value. The decrypt module(708) decrypts the second encrypt value, offered by a recording device, by using a host key allocated to the host system, and generates the first decrypt value. The host authentication controller offers the first variable and the first encrypt value to the recording device or receives the second variable and the second encrypt value from the recording device. The host authentication controller receives a response informing that the host is legal, and offers the record device a response informing that the recording device is legal in a case that the second variable is same as the first decrypt value.
