PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document retrieval apparatus which improves a reappearance ratio and prevent an increase whole time for the evaluation of retrieval conditions when a user retrieve desired documents from a document DB. SOLUTION: The document retrieval apparatus performs a morpheme analysis for inputted retrieval conditions to extract a word, and generates initial retrieval condition formulas from the stem of the word and the retrieval condition formulas. Furthermore, using results of the morpheme analysis for the word extracted from the retrieval condition formulas, the document retrieval apparatus generates narrowing retrieval condition formulas from changed forms for the word and the retrieval condition formulas. First, the first retrieval of document DB is performed for the initial retrieval condition formulas to create an intermediate result, and then the narrowing retrieval condition formulas are applied to the document of the intermediate result to perform whole document retrieval. Thereby, retrieval target data can be reduced by the first retrieval, so that an evaluation time of retrieval formulas can be prevented from increasing even for whole document retrieval in the second retrieval.
