PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image forming apparatus capable of reducing the error of a writing start position in a subscanning direction with respect to respective colors to eliminate color variation, and also improving image quality at low cost. SOLUTION: In the case of obtaining a color image by forming an electrostatic latent image on a photoreceptor with a plurality of laser beams based on color image data and superposing and transferring a plurality of color images from the photoreceptor to an intermediate transfer belt in the color image forming apparatus, writing start timing is set and a laser beam being the start of writing is selected out of a plurality of laser beams in order to correct the positional deviation of respective colors in the subscanning direction based on the position of the intermediate transfer belt and the synchronization detection signal of the laser beam when the writing with a plurality of laser beams is performed. Furthermore, the re-selection of the laser beam being the start of writing and/or the reset of the writing start timing is varied in line units in accordance with the rotation variance of the photoreceptor and the intermediate transfer belt.
