PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing fine particulateα-alumina having more minimized particle diameter. SOLUTION: The fine particulateα-alumina is manufactured by firing a powdery mixture which contains anα-alumina precursor and a seed crystal particle and in which the content of the seed crystal particle expressed in term of oxide is 25 pts.mass per 100 pts.mass in total of theα-alumina precursor and the seed crystal particle. Theα-alumina precursor is, for example, an aluminum hydrolysis product. The seed crystal particle is, for example, a particle of corundum type metal oxide. The powdery mixture is obtained by removing water from a water-based mixture prepared by dissolving or dispersing theα-alumina precursor and seed crystal particle in water.
