An apparatus and method for transmitting control information to provide an MBMS (multimedia broadcast/multicast service) service in a mobile communication system. Upon receipt of a request for an MBMS service from at least one UE (user equipment), a service ID is assigned to the MBMS service and a MAC (media access control) message containing the service ID and control information of the MBMS service is transmitted to the at least one UE on a common channel.
