PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive zoom lens whose resolution is high and whose distortion aberration is small by effectively arranging an aspherical lens/a compound aspherical lens, and which is compact when it is used/when it is retracted and housed, and consists of a small number of component lenses. SOLUTION: The zoom lens is constituted of a 1st lens group and a 2nd lens group in order from an object side, and the 1st lens group has negative refractive power and is constituted by arranging a 1st lens being a meniscus lens having negative refractive power (hereinafter referred to as a negative lens) and a 2nd lens being a meniscus lens having positive refractive power (hereinafter referred to as a positive lens), and the 2nd lens group has positive refractive power and is constituted by arranging a 3rd lens being a biconvex lens and a 4th lens being a meniscus negative lens.
