PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly reliable starter 1 capable of maintaining the meshing property of a pinion 5 and a ring gear 20 satisfactorily for a long time. SOLUTION: The pinion 5 collides against the ring gear 20 and stops its moving and then retracts on an output shaft 3 relatively by action of helical spline and straight spline while pressing and contracting a pinion spring 21. Retraction amount of the pinion 5 is equivalent to amount of rotation by 1/2 pitch of an interval (pitch) of adjacent teeth or more in the peripheral direction of itself before closing a main contact of a motor 2. When the pinion 5 rotates up to a position where it can mesh with the ring gear 20 before closing the main contact of the motor 2, the pinion 5 is pushed out by reaction force of the pinion spring 21 to mesh with the ring gear 20.
