PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device which facilitates the starting of a discharge lamp and can be made smaller in size and lighter in weight. SOLUTION: This is a discharge lamp lighting device which is provided with a discharge lamp 5, a chopper circuit 4 for converting the power supply input voltage into a voltage and current necessary for operation, a pulse voltage generating circuit 2 for supplying a constant voltage and current, and a transformer 3 for supplying a high voltage to the discharge lamp 5. It is characterised by being provided with a DC generating circuit which is composed of a DC component generating secondary coil S1 of the transformer 3, a diode D2 connected in series on the input side of the DC component generating secondary coil S1, and a capacitor C3 connected in parallel to the diode D2 and the DC component generating secondary coil S1 and generates a DC component having a higher voltage than the above power supply input voltage; and a pulse voltage superposition circuit which superimposes a pulse voltage on the DC component generated by the DC generating circuit are provided.
