摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a glass preform for an optical fiber having a high yield of a refractive index controlling substance, capable of uniformly adding the refractive index controlling substance and also having high refractive index distribution accuracy and to provide a device used for the method. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing glass, a gas supply pipe and an exhaust pipe are closed after supplying a gas containing the refractive index controlling substance in a necessary quantity to a reaction vessel in which a glass particulate deposit is charged, and the refractive index controlling substance is added to the glass particulate deposit while keeping surroundings of the glass particulate deposit in a gas atmosphere containing the refractive index controlling substance. A device for adding the refractive index controlling substance has a reaction vessel, a means for supplying the gas containing the refractive index controlling substance to the reaction vessel, a means for exhausting the gas from the reaction vessel and a means for rotating the reaction vessel, and a part where a support rod of the glass particulate deposit is brought into contact with the reaction vessel is closed and the refractive index controlling substance is added while the glass particulate deposit is rotated by simultaneously rotating the support rod and the reaction vessel.
