1,162,224. Preparing oxymethylene copolymers. BRITISH INDUSTRIAL PLASTICS Ltd. 13 Jan., 1967 [26 Jan., 1966], No. 3483/66. Addition to 1,111,232. Heading C3P. Cyclic oligomers of formaldehyde are copolymerized with other compounds in the presence of as catalysts (1) SbF 5-x R x , where R is chlorine, bromine, alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, or fluorosulphonyl, and is 1 or 2, or (2) a salt containing the anion SbF 6-y A y #, where A is chlorine, bromine, hydroxyl, alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, or fluorosulphonyl, and y is 1, 2 or 3. Specified classes of comonomer are styrene and substituted styrenes, aldehydes, allyl compounds, cyclic esters, unsaturated aliphatic and alicyclic hydrocarbons, vinyl ethers and esters, and N-vinyl and C-vinyl heterocyclic compounds. Specified cyclic oligomers are trioxan and tetroxan. Specified classes of cations in the compounds (2) are the carbonium, carboxonium, oxonium, hydroxonium, and anyl diazonium cations. In the examples, trioxan is copolymerized with styrene (1-3, 7, 8), norbomadiene (5, 6, 9, 10) and betapropiolactone (4), using the following catalysts: triphenylmethyl - pentafluorochloroantiomonate (1, 4, 5, 9, 10), triphenyl methyl pentafluorohydroxyantimonate (3, 6), benzoyl pentafluorochloroantimonate (2), antimony dichlorotrifluoride (7), and triphenyl methyl pentafluorofluorosulphonyl antimonate (8), and using cyclohexane (1-8) and methylene dichloride (9, 10) as solvents. |
